Brushes are already a daily tool for SPD techs — they shouldn't be a daily puzzle. Here's how we made the specialty brush line identifiable from across the room.
No more drawer guessing.
Walk into most SPDs and you'll find the same scene: a drawer or rolling cart with forty-plus brushes, most of them the same translucent handle color with small printed text you can barely read under the lights. Finding the right specialty brush for a given tray can take longer than the cleaning itself.
We had seen enough crowded brush drawers — so we rebuilt identification into the product itself.
Every specialty brush in our current production run now carries three identification features printed directly on the handle:
Color-ring indicators at the handle base — each brush family gets a distinct, saturated band color that stays visible even through a decon shield. Rigid printed labels replace ink-stamped text that would wear off after a few cycles. Function icons tell you what the brush is for at a glance — no more reading fine print at arm's length.
Use case, marked on the tool.
The system works because every brush carries a use-case icon specific to its job. Need a brush for acetabular reamers? It says so, with both the text and an icon. Micro hinge? It's labeled. Channel-safe? It's marked.
Your team doesn't have to guess anymore. They just grab the match.
We spec'd the icon set to be recognizable across cultures and reading abilities — the same way AAMI IFU symbols work. That matters in facilities where SPD staff may speak a first language that isn't English, or where the lighting conditions at decon aren't forgiving to small-font text.

The secondary win here is training. New techs orient faster when the tool teaches them — they can pick up a brush, read the icon, and know what tray it's meant for without asking. Leads audit faster because they can confirm the right brush went into the right kit from across the room. Trainers spend less time repeating the same material.

What's next.
This is the first phase. The next generation will extend the same system to our standard channel brush line — harder to pull off at scale because the SKU count is ten times larger, but worth it for the same reasons. Expect a rollout over the next two quarters.
